OLYMPICEU – The European Values Olympiad
Andravida-Kyllini Transnational Event
Promoting Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment
OLYMPICEU – The European Values Olympiad is a European cooperation project funded by the European Union through the Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values (CERV) Programme.
The project promotes active citizenship, democratic participation, social inclusion and the strengthening of European values through cooperation between local authorities, institutions and communities in Greece and Italy.
Through a series of transnational events and participatory activities, OLYMPICEU supports the development of more inclusive civic participation mechanisms and encourages citizens to take an active role in local governance and democratic life.
Third Transnational Event – Andravida-Kyllini
Title: Promoting Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment
Location: Andravida-Kyllini, Greece
Date: 7–9 March 2026
The third transnational event of the OLYMPICEU project was hosted in Andravida-Kyllini and focused on advancing gender equality in civic leadership and strengthening women’s participation in local governance and decision-making processes.
Building on the outcomes of the previous project events, the Andravida-Kyllini meeting introduced a targeted focus on gender-related barriers and on the structural and cultural constraints that may affect women’s access to leadership roles within civic and institutional contexts.
The event represented an important step in the progression of the project from general inclusion towards more structured and representative forms of civic engagement, with particular attention to gender equality, balanced participation and inclusive governance.
Event Objectives
The activities carried out during the event were designed to:
- Promote gender equality in civic leadership;
- Strengthen women’s participation in local governance;
- Analyse structural, cultural and institutional barriers to women’s civic engagement;
- Encourage more balanced and inclusive decision-making processes;
- Support women-led civic participation;
- Reinforce dialogue between citizens, institutions and local authorities.
The event also contributed to increasing awareness of gender equality challenges and to promoting practical approaches for more inclusive and representative civic leadership.
Activities Implemented
The programme combined institutional sessions, participatory workshops, thematic discussions and co-creation activities.
The activities were designed to move from general social inclusion towards a more focused analysis of gender equality in civic leadership. Participants examined the factors that may limit women’s participation in leadership roles, including social norms, unequal access to opportunities, work-life balance constraints and limited representation in decision-making processes.
Special attention was also dedicated to intersectionality and to the additional challenges faced by women belonging to underrepresented or marginalized groups.
The final part of the event focused on solution-oriented sessions and women-led civic engagement spaces, supporting the identification of priorities and the development of initial proposals aimed at strengthening women’s role in local governance.
Contribution to the OLYMPICEU Project
The Andravida-Kyllini event contributed to the progressive development of inclusive and representative civic participation models within OLYMPICEU.
The activities strengthened awareness of gender-related barriers, encouraged women’s active role in civic discussions and supported the definition of more inclusive governance approaches.
The outcomes of the event also prepared the ground for the final phase of the project, dedicated to trust-building between citizens and local authorities.
